A rental receipt becomes proof at the moment somebody disputes something, and whether it is proof or merely a note was decided when it was issued. Money received on the third of the month could be this month's rent, last month's arrears, or half of each. It states the balance afterwards
A receipt that ends with the remaining balance is a statement of position, and a run of them is an account. That is why the balance line turns a pile of receipts into evidence: any single receipt answers the question of where the tenancy stood on that date, which is what an arrears claim or a deposit deduction actually turns on.
It sits in a numbered sequence
Numbering per tenancy makes a missing receipt visible, and a complete sequence is far more persuasive than a handful produced selectively. It also protects the landlord: a tenant asserting a payment that never appears in a complete numbered run is making a claim that can be tested, rather than one that turns on memory.
It was issued before anybody asked
A receipt produced after a dispute begins is evidence created by an interested party once the stakes were known. One issued as a matter of routine, in sequence, months earlier, is a business record. The difference costs nothing at the time and is substantial afterwards, which is the argument for issuing every time rather than on request.

Does an electronic transfer need a receipt?
The bank shows the transfer; only the receipt shows what it was applied to. Where a payment clears part of an arrears and part of the current month, that application is the whole point.
Is a text message confirming payment enough?
It is better than nothing and it is not a record, because it rarely names the period or the balance and it lives somewhere nobody can search in two years.
